Reflecting on 2024: A Year of Progress and Empowerment

As we approach the close of 2024, the African Immigrant Rights Council LLC looks back on a year filled with meaningful achievements. Founded with a mission inspired by President Julius Nyerere’s vision of mutual support and collective progress, we have worked tirelessly to support African immigrants in the U.S., advocating for their rights, providing essential resources, and fostering a sense of community.

This year, one of our most significant milestones was filing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests with USCIS and the Department of Justice, shedding light on conditions faced by African immigrants. By publishing the results on our website, we’ve made this vital information accessible to the public, empowering our community to make informed decisions.

Looking Ahead to 2025: Building on Success

As we move into 2025, we are eager to build on the foundation laid this year. Here’s what you can expect from us in the coming year:

  1. Educating the Public on Asylum Procedures:
Navigating the asylum process can be daunting. In 2025, we will launch educational campaigns to demystify these procedures. Through workshops, online resources, and one-on-one guidance, we aim to ensure every asylum seeker is equipped with the knowledge they need to advocate for themselves.
  2. Simplifying FOIA Requests for Our Community:
Building on our FOIA successes, we will provide step-by-step guidance to help individuals file their own requests. Access to information is a powerful tool for accountability and justice, and we want to make this process accessible to everyone.
  3. Expanding Community Support:
We will deepen our holistic services, from connecting individuals with healthcare and employment opportunities to fostering peer support networks. By strengthening these bonds, we aim to create a resilient community that thrives together.
  4. Advocacy for Systemic Change:
In addition to direct support, we will amplify our advocacy efforts to address systemic issues impacting African immigrants. By collaborating with policymakers, community leaders, and other organizations, we will push for reforms that ensure a more just and equitable immigration system.

A Heartfelt Thank You

We couldn’t have achieved any of this without the unwavering support of our community, partners, and volunteers. Your contributions—whether through time, expertise, or financial donations—are the backbone of our work.

As we step into the new year, we invite you to continue this journey with us. Whether you’re seeking support, looking to volunteer, or interested in contributing to our mission, there’s a place for you here.

Together, let’s make 2025 another year of empowerment, progress, and unity.

In solidarity,

Sharifa Kalokola
